When Lord Vishnu descended on Prithvi as the avatars of Lord Rama and Shri Krishna, Lakshmi descended as their respective consort Sita Ji and Rukmini. 

Stories 

According to Vishnu Purana, Lakshmi emerged out of the ocean carrying the lotus flower together with the holy cow Kamdhenu, the tree Parijat, Varuni, the Chandra and Dhanvantari with Amrita, and the Apsaras. 

When Goddess Lakshmi offered the choice to go to Devas or Asura, the Goddess chose the side of the Devas. Among different deities, she picked Lord Vishnu and decided to be his consort forever. 

According to Linga Purana, Padma Purana, and Garuda Purana, Lakshmi is as the daughter of sage Bhrigu and his spouse Khayati. Lakshmi was named Bhargavi.
