About Milkha Singh
Milkha Singh (born 8 November 1929), nicknamed The Flying Sikh, is an Indian former track and field sprinter who was introduced to the sport while serving in the Indian Army. He was the only Indian athlete to win an individual athletics gold medal at a Commonwealth Games until Krishna Poonia won the discus gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He represented India in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. He set the national record of 45.73 seconds in 400 metres in 1960.Singh was born in a Sikh family in Govindpura village, now in Bhatinda district, Punjab, British India. He lost his parents and sister in the 1947 Partition of India. He took up athletics while serving in the Indian Army. He was first noticed in the 1956 National Games of India, where he won gold in 400 m and 200 m races. He participated in the 1958 Asian Games, where he won gold in 400 m and silver in 200 m race. He won gold in 400 m race in the 1960 Summer Olympics, but missed a medal in 200 m race finishing fourth.Milkha Singh was honoured with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in 1959.In 2001, he was given the Arjuna Award, India’s second highest sporting award, and in 2007, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award. He was the subject of the 2013 Bollywood film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

While Nirmal Kaur was the captain of the women’s volleyball team, Milkha Singh was a part of the athletics team. In Colombo, an Indian businessman had called the volleyball team and athletics team for a meeting and that’s when Milkha Singh had met Nirmal Kaur for the first time. For Milkha, it was love at first sight. The two had interacted with each other for long hours.
It is said that as there was no paper available at the place, Milkha Singh had written his hotel’s number on Nirmal Kaur’s hand. The two had later again met in 1958, however, their love story had begun in 1960, when the two had met at Delhi’s National Stadium.
