Barack Hussein Obama II (born August 4, 1961) is an American politician, lawyer, and author who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. In 2008, a year after beginning his campaign, and after a close primary campaign against Hillary Clinton, he was nominated by the Democratic Party for president.
Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama(born January 17, 1964) is an American attorney and author who served as the first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. She was the first African-American woman to serve in this position.Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, to Fraser Robinson III (1935–1991), a city water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain, and Marian Shields Robinson (b. July 30, 1937), a secretary at Spiegel’s catalog store.Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, Obama is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. In her early legal career, she worked at the law firm Sidley Austin where she met Barack Obama. Barack Obama, then 28, and Michelle Robinson, then 25, met at the law firm Sidley Austin LLP, where Robinson was assigned to be his mentor.
Though she was his mentor, that didn’t stop the future President from asking Robinson on a date. She said she was not so keen at the time.
“Barack, about a month in, asked me out, and I thought ‘No way. This is completely tacky,'”
But eventually she relented, and the pair went on a date. They started by having lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago, taking a stroll, then ending up going to see the Spike Lee film “Do The Right Thing.”
“He showed all the sides – he was hip, cutting edge, cultural, sensitive. The fountain – nice touch. The walk – patient,” Michelle later told The Telegraph.
“Take tips, gentlemen,” Barack added, smiling.
The date was eventually immortalized in the film “Southside With You.”
The pair got engaged at a dinner that was supposed to celebrate Barack passing his bar exam,
“And then the waiter came over with the dessert and a tray. And there was the ring,” Michelle later said. “And I was completely shocked.”
She told ABC News that he simply got down on one knee and asked. Michelle, of course, said yes.The couple was married on October 3, 1992.

Staying loyal to their roots in the Windy City, Barack and Michelle tied the knot at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Brides magazine reported that Michelle’s brother Craig walked her down the aisle, with Barack’s brother serving as his best man. At the reception, held at South Shore Cultural Center, the couple—she in an off-the-shoulder ’90s gown perfectly suited to the era—danced their first dance to Stevie Wonder’s “You and I,” and then took off for the California coast to celebrate their honeymoon.
